Plex, the media server software that works with your over the air antenna and HDHomeRun (or similar OTA tuner) to stream your local channels into your TV, has just added a new feature to automatically remove commercials.
The feature was added in an update the Plex team pushed out over the weekend. It was first spotted by cordcuttersnews. While most of the update was focused on fixing bugs, this new feature was also included. You’ll need to manually enable the feature by heading into your Plex DVR settings and finding the option, labeled “Remove Commercials.”
To use the feature, in addition to an antenna and tuner, you will need a Plex Pass, which costs $4.99 per month, $39.99 per year, or $149.99 for a lifetime subscription.
The Channels DVR, a product similar to Plex, also supports a commercial skipping feature. However, with Channels DVR the commercials are not removed from the recording. Instead, the program adds shortcut bookmarks on the timeline that allow users to double tap the fast forward button to skip over the commercial content.
