DIRECTV NOW has been aggressively moving to add more local channels to its service. In the last 24-48 hours we have learned that stations have been added from CBS affiliates belonging to Cox Media Group as well as ABC and CBS affiliates from Gray Television and Lockwood Broadcast Group.
Lockwood Broadcast Group owns 36 CBS stations throughout the US. This deal will result in a significant surge of CBS coverage for DIRECTV NOW which until this announcement had less than 20 CBS affiliates on the service.
We have learned that Cox Media Group’s CBS affiliates in Jacksonville, Seattle-Tacoma, and Dayton Ohio are expected to go live within days.
Lockwood also owns 4 ABC affiliates in in Kansas including Wichita, Colby, Garden City, and Ada Oklahoma.
We have also confirmed that stations owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nextstar Media Group are expected to go live on the service soon. Nextstar’s portfolio consists of 171 television stations across the U.S. Sinclair owns stations in over 100 markets (covering 40% of American households).
Nextstar Media CEO Perry Sook has indicated that his company plans to have deals with all major streaming services by year’s end:
“We are of a mind that we will have agreements with all the networks by year end and all of the participating OTT services by year end, and we’ll see what it ultimately amounts to” – Nextstar CEO Perry Sook
