StreamBuzz has learned that DIRECTV NOW is testing Dolby 5.1 audio on some channels for a select group of beta customers. This is according to subscribers who are participating in the beta program for the service’s upcoming “True Cloud DVR” add-on. We are reaching out to our sources inside DIRECTV NOW for confirmation and additional information.
This would be the first live TV streaming provider to broadcast in the Dolby Digital surround sound audio format, seen as a must for home video enthusiasts and available on cable and satellite services for many years.
By contrast, premium subscription video on demand (SVOD) leaders Netflix, Amazon , HBO and cable and satellite on-demand video and select channels routinely broadcast in surround sound formats for their premium 4K content and other titles.
In addition to surround sound, streaming providers will need to ramp up their video infrastructure to support the rapidly expanding catalog of 4K and HDR content consumers are expecting as well as 60 frames per second video for fast moving sports content.
